This was our attempt to clone 7-Seas Brewery (of Gig Harbor, WA) most popular beer...Balz Deep. It did not come out dead on but it came out great and we love it...enjoy!!
Great summer drinking Belgian made as an attempt to copy a beer fest winning brew from 7seas Brewery in Gig Harbor, WA. Brew-master Travis was given a challenge to make a beer with 2 mystery ingredients (lemon grass and coconut) and even though it is not his normal style he hit it out of the park and had the best beer at the fest. I made this for my wife and friends who wanted more and because Travis said it was a one and done thing for him. We left out the coconut because of the expense and because it did not seam to add much flavor...According to wife and friends the result was goooood! enjoy

The first full moon took place on August 1st and today is a second full moon, called a “Blue Moon”. A Blue [...]
I’m a big fan of a little rye being thrown into my IPA. Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye is my favorite beer that utilizes the grain to great effectiveness, creating a beer with just the right levels to attain a masterfully balanced drinking experience. There have been a few beers of the ilk that have [...]
It’s been a long while since I’ve posted a commercial on the site — there just hasn’t been anything all that noteworthy. That is, until now. Behold the awesomeness that is “Beer Chase.”

I’m not entirely sure what a Scottish Style IPA is, but that’s what this latest effort in the Williamsberg Alewerks Brewers’ Choice limited line of releases is billed as. After thoroughly enjoying the surprise Bitter Valentine from the same line of releases, I was more than excited to see what the brewery had to offer [...]
There’s a reason you’ll see more than a few beer reviews of Weyerbacher products on this site. They make some tremendous beers. From tasty Old Heathen Imperial Stout to the outrageously cellerable barleywine, Blithering Idiot, the company puts out some of the best brews available on the East Coast. That said, it’s pretty much a [...]

Germany rye beer (Roggenbier) is a fairly rare style today that predates the German purity laws, made from a grist where the majority of the grain bill is malted rye. This week we take a look at the history of rye beer, the style itself and how to brew it at home. The History of [...]
This bottle of Magic Hat Hocus Pocus is the last of a trio of samples that I received from the brewery a couple of weeks ago. It’s a 4.5% ABV American Pale Wheat Ale that, while refreshing, comes across rather lackluster. At least, after having had the rich and malty Hex, as well as the [...]
I’ve been asked whether I review every beer I drink several times through the years. And the answer is pretty simple, really. I don’t. I do the best I can, but sometimes there just isn’t an opportunity to do so, or I’m just lazy. There are several beers that I enjoy on a regular basis [...]
#craftbeer @redhooknh The 16th annual Redhook Fest took place on Saturday, August 18th at the Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, NH. Not having been able to make last years fest, I was stoked to get to go this year. The fact that one of my favorite bands, Ryan Montbleau would be playing, AND I had great [...]
It’s too early I tell you. Temperatures are still in the high 80′s — hell, we have another month of Summer left. I shouldn’t be drinking any sort of Oktoberfest/Marzen at this point in the year, but I am. It’s actually the second such beer I’ve had in the past week. I should be ashamed. [...]

Sour flavors are a common flaw in many home brewed beers. Outside of a handful of sour beer styles, most sour flavors are undesirable. This week’s article on sour beer is part of my ongoing series on off-flavors in beer including the previous articles on Diacetyl, DMS, and Esters, Phenolics and Tannins as well as [...]

@SmuttynoseBeer, #craftbeer Yesterday, during the heat wave, I ventured over to the Smuttynose brewery for the release of the Strawberry Short Weiss — a light, refreshing Berliner Weisse. I arrived at the brewery approximately at 5:45 to a full parking lot and a line outside the garage door. There was some excitement in the air, [...]
: Tuesday , August 7, 2012 Belgian Strong Dark Ale- Biere Noir This summer has really been my summer of brewing Belgians . Given that I don't have tightly controlled fermentation temperatures , it's the perfect time for Belgian yeasts . Every summer I try to brew a stout or something dark that I am not in the mood to drink in the hot months . Given that patience has been a learned process for me over my 8 years of brewing , I found that brewing an RIS or in this case a Belgian Strong Ale in July is perfect for letting sit for several . months I have always wanted to brew a Belgian Strong Ale , I love beers like Unibroue's Terrible or Lost Abbey's 10 Commandments When you look at a Belgian Strong recipe it's great how simple they are with so much character coming from the yeast not unlike
